Briefing
The requirements for the cover were to create a visual link to the first book without the use of fruit or vegetable images, employing a simple, minimal style. Another goal was to try and hide the word diabetes from the cover as much as possible since this journal will be an item people will use at all times, and unfortunately, there is still prejudice surrounding the disease.
For the interior layout, apart from the normal text pages, we had to create four different full-page tables, repeated accordingly ib the publication and filled in by the end-user of the journal. We were provided with the content and were free to decide on the design.
The Decision Tree Journal is to be self-published, spiral-bound with a thick carton cover.
Decision Tree Journal’s Cover Design
The journal completes the Mastering Diabetes book, which, being a New York Times Bestseller, has a widely recognisable brand design.
For this cover, we combined the new title details with the Mastering Diabetes brand design, keeping the cover clean, modern and simple in accordance with the briefing. The idea was to not use the actual logo of M-D (so that the word Diabetes is not that obvious on the cover out of respect for the privacy of the journal’s users), while still being reminded of it. To that end, we created a copy of the logo, replacing its words with these of the Journal.
Furthermore, we utilised the same blue-and-white palette as the logo, helping consequently the journal combine aesthetically with the original book. We created two options for the publication’s cover: for insulin-dependent and non-insulin-dependent diabetics. The use of different colours made possible not having to print the word insulin on the cover either.
